Western Woman

A tribute to Rattlesnake Kate & Neyla Pekarek

Created: July 2020

Created in 2020, this stained glass is 5’ high with approximately 950 pieces of glass cut to craft an art nouveau inspired illustration inspired by the absolutely stunning album Rattlesnake by Neyla Pekarek and the exhibit at the Greeley History Museum, CO of Kate’s life, her snake dress and an astounding tale of bravery and heroism that started it all. This piece was conceived to tell the tale of the western feminine legend of Rattlesnake Kate. Shrugging off the conformities of being ladylike, this 1925 frontier woman saved herself, her son, and her horse from a rattlesnake herd in the wilds of Colorado. Worried no one would believe a woman could accomplish such a feat, she tailored a dress from the skins of the snakes and gained international fame. It’s a story of breaking the mold, standing up for yourself and becoming who you want to be in this world slithering with predators trying to put you into a box of their making.
