Flamboyance of Flamingos

Created: January 2022

Created in 2022, this stained glass is 2.5’ squared with approximately 305 pieces of glass cut in a Miami inspired color palette. This illustration depicts the story of the Miami MetroZoo in 1992 when Hurricane Andrew had its sight set to touch down and carve a path right through the zoo in southern tip of Florida. The zookeeper at the time didn’t know how to protect his flock of birds that wandered freely through the zoo’s streets. At the last minute, he barricaded the flamboyance of flamingos into the zoo’s bathroom where the birds comically huddled into the corner and called the bathroom home for the next 3 days, with all outliving the storm. This piece created to provide privacy in a bathroom, and what better nature story to tell than three flamingos huddling together in front of some traditional bathroom fish scale tile patterns.
